Blockbusters

It was near the end of the World War II.

 

The Nazis were focusing on the eastern front against the Soviet Union, and Western Europe seemed to be gradually recaptured by the Allies after the Normandy Invasion. To weaken Nazis resistance and end the long war, the U.S.-British military coalition decided to air strike the city of Dresden, the largest remaining industrial city of eastern Germany. The night was getting deeper and deeper, black masses larger than a minivan began to hurtle into the ground creating a suffocating blanket of fire. These huge, powerful bombs were called Blockbusters, each one capable of eliminating an entire block from the map.

It was in the Hollywood that the Blockbuster transcended its literal meaning and began to be used to symbolize certain hugeness. The first blockbuster film was JAWS, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1975 and a starring a shark (although the shark first appeared about 80 minutes after the movie started). JAWS led the splendid revival of the American film industry, by achieving $200 million in box office sales in the U.S. for the first time in film history. Back-to-back three pointers of Star Wars (A New Hope, in 1977) established Blockbuster movies one genre.

 

There is another industry that surprisingly reflects film industry. Capital-intensive, long development period, minimal success rate, and a tremendous benefit from the success: the pharmaceutical industry. The market size of it is even much bigger than that of film industry. One-year sales of single COVID-19 vaccine ($59B, Pfizer, 2021) is far above the sum of worldwide gross of Top 30 films ($43B, overall). Apart from COVID-19 effect, Merck’s anti-tumor immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab ($17B, Merck, 2021) made more than twice as much money as the whole Avengers series did ($7.7B, overall).

 

What? From the World War II to another anti-cancer drug story. You get bored? Please deal with it. This is where we talk about anti-cancer immunotherapy. 😊 Maybe I should try AVATAR and pembrolizumab story next time. Their parallelism.

두번째 세계대전이 끝나갈 무렵의 일이다.

 

나치 독일군은 한창 소련과의 동부전선에 집중하고 있었고, 서부 유럽은 노르망디 상륙작전을 시작으로 점차 연합군에게 탈환되는 모양새였다. 미국과 영국 연합군은 독일의 저항을 약화시키고 기나긴 전쟁에 종지부를 찍기 위하여 독일 동부의 공업도시 드레스덴을 공습하기로 결정한다. 작전의 밤은 깊어져 가고, 드럼통 두개를 합친 것보다도 더 큰 검은색 덩어리들이 하나 둘 지면에 곤두박질치기 시작했다. 하나하나가 한 블록 전체를 지도에서 지워버릴 수 있을 정도로 거대하고 강력한 이 폭탄들은 블록버스터라고 불렸다.

 

Blockbuster가 문자 그대로의 의미를 넘어서서 어떤 거대함을 상징하는 표현으로 쓰이게 된 것은 전쟁의 상처가 아물어가기 시작할 즈음의 할리우드에서였다. 영광의 첫 주인공으로 꼽히는 블록버스터 영화는 1975년 개봉한 스티븐 스필버그 감독, 상어 주연의 JAWS (하지만 막상 상어가 영화에 처음으로 등장하는 것은 80분쯤이다.). JAWS는 영화사 최초로 전미 박스오피스 매출 2억 달러를 달성하면서 위기에 빠져 있었던 영화산업의 화려한 부활을 이끌었다. 연이어 개봉된 스타워즈 (새로운 희망)까지 큰 성공을 거두면서 블록버스터 영화는 하나의 장르로 자리를 잡게 된다.

 

집적자본의 투자, 오랜 개발기간, 아주 낮은 성공확률, 성공 시 얻을 수 있는 엄청난 benefit까지, 놀라울 정도로 블록버스터 영화 산업과 많이 닮은 또 다른 산업이 있으니 바로 제약산업이다. 어쩌면 제약산업이야말로 시장 규모의 관점에서는 더 블록버스터급이라고 할 수 있는데, 작년 단 한해동안 판매되었던 코로나 백신의 매출이 역대 흥행순위 1위부터 50위까지 영화의 모든 매출을 다 더한 것보다 더 크다는 사실이 이를 증명한다. 코로나의 특수성을 빼놓고 보더라도, 아바타, 타이타닉, 그리고 네 편의 어벤져스 시리즈의 역대 모든 수입을 합친 것보다 작년 한 해 동안 팔린 Merck 사의 면역항암제 Pembrolizumab의 매출이 더 크다는 사실이 이를 다시금 뒷받침한다. 너무 기승전면역항암제 아니냐고? 어쩔 수 없다. 여기는 면역항암제를 이야기하는 곳이니까. 어쩌면 다음에는 Avatar와 Pembrolizumab 이야기를 조금 해봐야겠다.
